What is GST ?

Goods & Services Tax (GST) is a single indirect tax scheme which has replaced many other indirect taxes in India such as the central excise duty, Value added tax, service tax, sales tax etc. however many other indirect taxes are still in existence and collected by government e.g custom duty. The Goods and Service Tax Act-2017 was approved in the house of Parliament on 29th March 2017 and came into effect on 1st July 2017.

In other words Goods & Service tax (GST) a single domestic indirect tax law for the entire country. GST is levied on the supply of goods and services or both. Goods and Services Tax Law in India is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based tax that is levied on every value addition.

Under the GST regime, the tax is levied at every stage of sale.
In the case of intra-state supplies Central Goods & Services tax (CGST) and State Goods & Services tax (SGST) are charged. All the inter-state supplies are chargeable to the Integrated Goods & Services Tax (IGST). Further in case of union territories SGST will replace UTGST

It is Mandatory for businesses to register in GST as regular taxable persons if their annual turnover exceeds the threshold limit of Rs. 40 lakhs ( For Goods) or Rs. 20 lakhs ( For Services), or Rs. 10 lakhs, as applicable for some special cases.
